Ukrainian National Identity

  National identity is a collective sense of belonging to a nation that is produced through shared meanings (stories, symbols, memories, norms, practices) and what distinguishes “us” from “others.” Triandafyllidou (1998) says “national identity is defined and/or re-defined through the influence of ‘significant others’, namely, other nations or ethnic groups that are perceived to threaten the ingroup’s distinctive identity and/or independence” (p. 594). The national identity of Ukraine centers on its religion, language, unique culture, and ethnicity. Yet much of its identity also formed and continue to form through struggles with Russia.  Religion Religion has been vital in shaping Ukrainian national identity.   Welcome to My Eurovision Ukraine Blog Welcome! This blog focuses on Ukraine  && its participation in the Eurovision Song Contests. Eurovision is often known for its large spectacle and sound. However, I am interested in how it can serve as a lens into national identity, everyday life, and in the case of Ukraine, a people's fight and resiliency.  I chose Ukraine because through my nonprofit, I am a part of efforts that deliver life-sustaining diabetes supplies to Ukrainians who would otherwise have no access. I work very closely with colleagues who grew up in Ukraine, whose families still live there, and who take real physical risks by returning every few months to carry these supplies in by hand. Their stories, commitment, and courage have made Ukraine feel close to me. One day, I hope to help deliver these supplies in person. I come to Eurovision as a beginner.
